An Arizona restaurant celebrated its 75th anniversary by cooking a 25-foot, 7-inch chimichanga that’s believed to be a new Guinness World Record.
Ashley Negron, director of marketing and brand management for Macayo’s Mexican Restaurants, said Guinness told officials no record exists for the world’s largest chimichanga, so the record-keeping organization set the goal for originating the title at 23 feet, 7 inches.
Negron said a team of about 25 Macayo’s employees gathered at the location in Ahwatukee to assemble the massive deep-fried burrito from dozens of flour tortillas, 500 pounds of shredded chicken, 250 pounds of refried beans, 250 pounds of rice and multiple gallons of salsa.
Evidence from the effort still must be reviewed by Guinness before the record is made official.
Macayo’s claims the chimichanga was invented at its original eatery in the 1940s, when someone accidentally dropped a burrito into the deep fryer.
The story is unconfirmed, and another restaurant in Tucson claims to have invented the dish under similar circumstances around the same time.
